I am looking for a generator that would be appropriate for working on AM and FM radios and FM stereo if possible. I have looked on ebay and they are quite expensive. I hope to find one that has solid state circuitry that is reliable for calibrating AM and FM RF and IF circuits.

    Thank you!

one way that perhaps you hadn’t thought of is just to download one that you can run on your computer. I had a quick search and came up with this one which I havent’ tested but there may be a lot of others. I can’t verify the download page but you can search for others like it as well.

you can just couple it through a coil so there isn’t any direct elecrical connection to your soundcard. If nothing else it’s an easy way to check your signal generator’s calibration. also any radio with a digital tuner could probably be used to check it. I had fun with a downloaded one as I’d put it on a really high frequency and found it bothered my girlfriend but I couldn’t hear it at all. I could check my own hearing range just by playing the sound through the speakers 😉

they commonly come up at our club meeting events and most collectors just need one. If you find an eico or a precision one, I think chances are they’d be accurate and they are fairly common. a local collector should be ale to flush one out without resorting to ebay. I wouldn’t worry about it not be ing a digital one. if it’s off you can at least verify that fairly easily.

If you were local I’d sugest attending our swap meet this weekend or maybe checking with the sparc museum. there’s a good chance they get donated occasionally but they probably only need so many to use as display objects. I can’t vouch for them but it would be worth asking if you are ever near here.
